🎨 Welcome to the August 2025 Newsletter

Hello and thank you for joining me for this special edition of my newsletter.

A warm welcome in particular to those of you who signed up at the Music Hall at the end of August — it’s a pleasure to have you here.

In this issue, I’m sharing the newsletter that went out last week, so you can catch up on the latest painting and news. I’m also working on a brand-new piece which I hope to finish by the end of next week. You’ll see it featured in the next edition.

I truly appreciate your interest in my artwork, and I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and exploring more paintings on my website.

Thank you again for your support,

John

A Sicilian Seaside Village – Capturing Timeless Calm in Watercolour

Sicily, with its rugged coastline and sun-bleached villages, has always carried an air of mystery and history. Though I have never stepped onto the island myself, I have often been captivated by documentaries that reveal its hidden corners, its people, and its enduring traditions. One image in particular stayed with me – a small seaside village seemingly untouched by time. That moment became the inspiration for my latest watercolour, Sicilian Seaside Village.

What drew me most was the way the houses seemed to grow out of the rocks, each one shaped to fit every inch of available space. There’s a striking sense of depth and texture here – from the sharp cliff edges to the simple boats bobbing at the shoreline, hinting at how remote and secluded this place must be.

The palette of the painting is dominated by shades of blue – the sea, the boats, the cliffs – all working together to bring a cool, calm atmosphere. The buildings, weathered by centuries of sun, salt, and wind, reveal soft creams, greys, and ochres that tell their own story of resilience. I’ve avoided the distractions of modern life – no tarred roads, pylons, or petrol engines – so that the viewer can step into a quieter, slower world.

To keep the scene alive, I’ve added small flashes of colour: a red cloth, the gold of a fire, the green of a vine. These touches, though subtle, bring warmth and a sense of lived-in character.

For me, this painting carries a feeling of calmness – a reminder that there are still places in the world where time seems to stand still, and where simplicity remains beautiful.

I hope you enjoy viewing Sicilian Seaside Village below, and that it brings you a moment of calm too.
